PURL, J.C. - Mr. J.C. Purl died at his residence three miles east of Bentonville on Thursday, Jan. 14, 1897 of heart disease. He was born in Kentucky Dec. 19, 1824. Lived in Missouri and Kansas many years and came to Arkansas about a year ago, locating on the farm where he died. He was married to Susan A. Hanks Feb. 22, 1849. She still survives him after almost 48 years of married life. Six children were born to them, four of whom survive: Mrs. J.L. Gooding of this place, Mrs. G.W. Lester of Cripple Creek, Col.; Dr. H.B. Purl of Kirksville, Mo. and Mrs. G.W. Cassidy of Rochester, N.Y., all of whom attended the funeral. Mr. Purl became a Christian and united with the Baptist church about 45 years ago and has since then lived an honest, devoted Christian life. His death was very sudden. In the morning he was about his work, at noon, dead. The funeral service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.T. Moore, Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. after which the remains were placed in the Odd Fellows cemetery at Bentonville.
