A.F. Kessel was born in Grant Co., West Va. June 25, 1847; died at Hiwasse Sept. 14, 1918 aged 71 years, 3 months and 14 days. He was married to Naomi Rhupart in 1866, to which union were born 3 children: Mrs. W.H. Noel of Buffville, Kan.; Mrs. Sam Noel, Altoona, Kan.; John R. Kessel, Cherryvale, Kan. This wife died June 10, 1916. He was again married Feb. 10, 1917 to the Widow Hudson, who still survives him with six step-children.

The wife of A.F. Kessel died at her home in Hiwasse Saturday, June 10 at the age of 82 years and two months. The lady had been in delicate health for some years. Mr. and Mrs. Kessel moved to Hiwasse from Altoona, Kans. last February and Mrs. Kessel had improved some in health until three weeks ago when she began to rapidly decline. She was a member of the Church of God. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Wm. Edwards Sunday, June 11 at Mt. Pleasant, at which place the interment was made. A large crowd of people attended the services. All of their children were present when the mother died - two daughters, Lillie Noel and Mary Mildred Noel, Thayer, Kan.; one son, John R. Kessel, Cherryvale, Kan. One granddaughter, Etta Hill of Kansas City and Mrs. Kessel's brother, U.D. Powell, Altoona, Kan. were also present.
