With approximately 500 persons, including close to 100 Masons, in attendance, funeral services for Lon Williams, aged 63 years, eight months and 15 days, superintendent of the Benton County Home and a former judge and legislative representative of Benton County, who died at the Home at 1:45 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 14th, 1933 following a long illness, were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church at Hiwasse, this county, conducted by the Rev. W.E. White of the Bentonville Church, assisted by the Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of the M.E. Church, South of Bentonville. Interment was in Mount Pleasant cemetery near Hiwasse with Masonic ceremonies in charge of the Bentonville Lodge of which Judge Williams was a member. Past Master Fred Douglas served in the place of W.H. Oliver, Bentonville worshipful master, who was unable to be present, and Dick Carter and Sam Whiteside of the Gentry Masonic Lodge acted as officiating master and chaplain, respectively, at the grave. The active Masonic pallbearers were Judge Lee Seamster, Judge David Compton, Mayor Sam Beasley, Representative Clyde T. Ellis, Attorney Alvin Seamster and George Williams, a past master of the Bentonville Lodge. The funeral arrangements were in charge of Kerr & Callison of Bentonville. Judge Williams was born in Haywood County, North Carolina and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Williams. His mother, before her marriage, was a Miss Owens. When he was four years of age his parents brought their children to Arkansas, locating south of Hiwasse and Judge Williams spent the greater part of his life here in Benton County, growing up on the farm and spending much of his early life in agricultural pursuits. He had been prominent in Benton County political affairs for many years and had served two terms in the Arkansas legislature and two terms as county judge. It was during his incumbency of the office of county judge, from 1904 until 1908, that the present attractive, modernly equipped Benton County Home for destitute persons was built and for the past eight years he has been superintendent of that institution. Prior to that he was in the mercantile business at Hiwasse for some time. Judge Williams also had taught school in this county for 14 years and was admitted to the practice of law in 1906. He had been a Mason since early manhood. Besides his wife, Mrs. Lucy X. Williams, Judge Williams is survived by two sons, Esmond L. Williams of Gravette, Ark. and Lyle Williams of Bentonville; by two daughters, Mrs. Ben Cooper of Slayton, Texas and Mrs. Freeman Edwards of Gravette; and by eight grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Laura Nichols of near Hiwasse and Mrs. Lucinda E. Rice of near Vaughn, this county, both of whom are nearing 80 years of age, and by a brother, Tom Williams of Talent, Oregon, who is 73 years of age. The friends attending the funeral included many from Washington County and from many parts of this county.

Lon Williams, former county judge and state representative, died at the county home of which he was superintendent Sunday, May 14th, 1933. He would have been 64 years old in August. He had been in ill health for several months and for some time it had been known that he could not recover. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. W.E. White, were held at the Mt. Pleasant Church west of Hiwasse Tuesday afternoon. The funeral was largely attended. Burial was made in the cemetery adjoining. The Masonic Lodge of Bentonville also took part in the service with W.H. Oliver in charge. Judge Williams was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Williams who came here from North Carolina in 1873. They located on a farm near Condit where the earlier part of his life was spent. Judge Williams served as county judge, being elected in 1902 and 1906. Later in 1915 he was elected to the state legislature and was re-elected in 1917. It was during his term as county judge that our splendid County Home, west of Bentonville, was built. In 1925 he was appointed as superintendent of the County Home and served as such until his death. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Lucy Williams, two sons, Esmond and Lyle Williams of Bentonville, and by two daughters, Mrs. Freeman Edwards of Gravette and Mrs. Ben Cooper of Slaton, Texas.
