Johnny Lee Hamby, son of Oscar Woodrow and Madelyn Smith Hamby, was born June 17, 1950, in Culp. He died October 1, 2000 in Melbourne. He was 50.
Mr. Hamby was a 1968 graduate of Calico Rock High School. He was involved in the trucking industry most of his working life. He was a truck driver instructor at Ozarka College in Melbourne and served as safety director for McNeill Trucking. At the time of his death, he was a self-employed truck driver.
He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of sergeant.
Mr. Hamby was united in marriage to Janice Lackey December 23, 1971, in Culp. To this union, two children were born. He was a member of Pinvelle Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Suvivors include his wife, Janice Hamby of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Mindy and Roger Woods, Jr. of Wideman; one son and daugher-in-law, Shawn and Billie Hamby of San Antonio, Texas; his parents, Oscar and Madelyn Hamby of Calico Rock; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Tom Wren of Mt. Home and Kim and Tim Graham of Conway; one brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Gayla Hamby of Viola; three grandchildren, Kaleb and Jarett Hamby and Jacie Woods; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Floyd and Annie Smith; and paternal grandparents, Hohny Henry and Louanna Hamby.
Funeral services were held October 4, 2000, at the Calcio Rock Funeral Home with Jamie Bilyew officiating. Honorary pallbearers were James Wilson, Ronnie McClellan, Bob Whiteaker, Gary Teague, Tom Wren II and Joshua Hamby.
A private burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the directions of Eddie's Family Funeral Home of Calico Rock.
In lieu of flowers, the family of Johnny Hamby respectfully requests that donations be made to the Ozarka College for a nursing scholarship in his memory. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund should send a check, payable to the Ozarka College Foundation, PO Box 10, Melbourne, AR 72556.
