SMITH, Adeline Frances OAKLEY - Mrs. C.E. Smith died Tuesday, April 3 at her home near Oakley Chapel following a very brief illness, the result of flu and pneumonia. It had been expected that the funeral would be held Thursday but owing to the heavy rain it was postponed until Friday morning. Services were held at the Oakley Chapel church at 11:00 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. Womack, pastor of the Central Methodist church of Rogers, Mrs. Smith having been a member of the Methodist church most of her life. Many beautiful flowers were received, a number of floral offerings coming from associates of Jas. Smith who is with the Harvey Dining Hall at Springfield. Burial was in Oakley Chapel cemetery by the side of her husband who died a number of years ago and who was one of the best known farmers in this part of the county and an officer of the Rogers Shippers Union for many years. Adeline Frances Oakley was born in Bedford County, Tennessee March 22, 1849 and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haywood Oakley. The family came to Benton County immediately following the Civil War and settled in the Oakley Chapel neighborhood. The farm on which Mrs. Smith died was a part of the old Oakley farm and was a gift from her father, so that she had lived on the same farm for more than sixty years. She was a sister of B.T. Oakley who died a few weeks ago in California and the only surviving member of the family is her brother, Bud Oakley, who lives southwest of town. Other members of the family were the late Mrs. W.B. Horsley, D.A. Oakley and Berry Oakley of this city. The family is one of the oldest and best known in the county. She was married to C.E. Smith in 1874 and to them were born nine children: Ellen C., who died in childhood; Miss Bell Smith, who was living at home with her mother; Mrs. Alva Dodson of Los Angeles, Calif.; James Robert, who died in infancy; James H. Smith of Springfield; Joe B. Smith of Webster, Florida; Mrs. J.C. Bell of Rogers; Mrs. C.O. Doescher, who died a number of years ago and who left three sons - Richard, who is serving with the Marines in Nicaragua, and the twins, Carl and Kenneth, who lived with their aunt and grandmother, and C.E. Smith, Jr., whose address is unknown. Kenneth Doescher was very low with flu and pneumonia when his grandmother died but is much improved now.
