TULSA, Okla. — Allene Ryan McCurley Adams, a 1930 graduate of Rogers High School, died in Tulsa on Saturday, July 5, 2008. She was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Calhoun County, Miss., to William Hosea and Emma Davis Ryan.
When she was 22 months old, her mother died and she was given in foster care to Alvis and Maud McCurley. They left Mississippi in 1918 to escape an epidemic of malaria and moved to Rogers, where Alvis was a carpenter working with Bob and Ott Bambach, contractors. Allene attended schools at Oak Hill country school and Rogers Academy through Rogers High School, graduating with the Class of 1930. She was a member of First Baptist Church on 2nd and Cherry streets.
After high school, she worked at Model Laundry doing office work, then at Land's Radio Shop, where in 1933, she met and married Theron Adams, a 1929 graduate of Rogers High School, an electrician, refrigeration technician and radio/TV repairman. They had two children.
Soon after the outbreak of World War II, the family moved to Rose City, a suburb of North Little Rock, where Theron was employed by the defense plant in Jacksonville.
Allene returned to Rogers with the children in late 1943, when Theron moved to Tulsa, Okla., to work for Douglas Aircraft Co. She worked at the Family Shoe Store in Rogers until 1954, when she moved to Stillwater, Okla., where she worked at JCPenney.
Allene and Theron were divorced in 1952 and remarried each other in 1985 after their interim marriages had been dissolved, hers by the death of her husband, Harold Theodore "Ted" Walker, in Stillwater.
Allene is predeceased by her parents and two husbands, Theron died in 1996.
Surviving are her daughter, Nancy Adams Powell of Tulsa; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Betty Adams of Stillwater; grandchildren, Roger and Jennifer Powell of Medway, Mass., and Theron "Terry" Powell of Rochester, Minn.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Stockdale Funeral Services in Rogers, online at stockdalefuneral.com. Pastor Sylvia Ireland, Allene's cousin from Fulton, Mo., will officiate.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service.
Burial will be in Oakley Chapel, beside her husband, Theron Adams.
