Mrs. Mary Jane Putman, wife of John L. Putman, died Thursday night at ten o'clock at the home on South Fourth and Pecan streets at the age of 53 years, nine months and fifteen days. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church Friday afternoon at three o'clock and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. U.S. Thomas, assisted by Rev. J.H. Kirkpatrick of the Presbyterian church. The choirs of both churches sang at the service which was largely attended by the friends who desired to show their respect to the memory of the deceased. Burial was made at Oakley's Chapel. Mrs. Putman had suffered for six years with tubercular trouble which resulted in frequent hemorrhages. Everything possible was tried but without avail. Several trips were made to the south. The change in climate seemed to help her lungs but it did not agree with her. For months she had been slowly fading away and the sorrowing family could only strive in every possible way to make her last hours with them painless and happy. While it had been realized for days that the end was drawing near it came so sudden as to be a decided surprise. It was but a quiet falling asleep in the arms of the Master she had served so long. And while the family was loath to see her go they realized that her long suffering was over. Mary Jane Deason was born 3 miles north of Rogers October 14, 1859, and was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Deason, the surviving members of the family being J.M.; W.G.; J.R.; A.J.; M.V. and D.M.C. Deason and Mrs. C.D. Wood of Rogers and vicinity; Mrs. C.J. Rayborn of Shawnee, Okla. and Mrs. Nannie Bowman of Rossville, Ill. She was married December 21, 1876 to John L. Putman, who survives her, and to them were born five children, Will, Bert, Bart, Kate and Lucy, all of this city. Most of their married life was spent on the farm at Prairie Creek but they moved to town some years ago. Mrs. Putman was a woman of many splendid Christian virtues and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her.
