NORFORK-Results for the state Medical Examiner's Office acknowledge there was no foul play in the death last week of high school guidance counselor, Mary Ann Kemp.
In a report dated Monday by Stepeh A. Erickson, MD of the Medical Examiner's Office, Kemp died from a mitral valve prolapse, or heart condition. The cause and manner of death for the beloved 40-year-old mentor was withheld until an autopsy was complete and submitted for investigative records.
'It didn't look like there was foul play and when the doctor ruled this, it confirmed our suspicion that there was no foul play.' Izard Count Sheriff Donnie Yancey said Thursday.
Yancey said he and the Coroner Eddie Howard have handled several unattended deaths and found it to be wise to do the autopsy.
'It looked like a natural death, but we didn't know for sure,' he said. He added that the physician also had a concern because the condition was not normally life-threatening. Howard stated previously that Kemp was thought to be out sick, but hadn't called in the absence to the school. Tuesday everning was the last time she was seen alive, according to Yancey, and relatives found her Friday morning at Pinevile.
Teachers, students, and others who knew Kemp were touched by her generous spirit and will to help other.
Eighth grade sutdent Ami Gutierrez wrote: 'Miss (Mary Ann) Kemp was a very loving, caring and understanding person. She lit up many people's lives. Miss Kemp was a wonderful person in my life, and she will always be in the hearts of everyone who knew her. I will never forget her, nor will anyone else.'
Kemp also set up a junior high cheerleading squad at the request of Gutierrez and friends. Kemp also served as the squad's sponsor.
A five-year friend Obleen Gillespie wrote, 'The passing of Mary Ann Kemp is a very sad occasion for those she has touched in her life. She loved the children and they loved her. Her concern for them was sincere.'
'She's going to be greatly missed,' School Superintendent Richard Billingsley said Thrusday. 'It's very sad. My heart goes out to hr family.'
Billingsley said counselors for Ozark Counseling Services talked to students and staff on Monday. The flag at the school has been flown at half mast all week, he said. Kemp was in her second year of employment.
Services for Kemp will be at 1PM Saturday at the Calico Rock Funeral Chapel with David Hudson officiating. Burial will be at Galatia Cemetery.
