Izard County Boy a Casualty in Korean Conflict

Official announcement was made the early part of this week of the death of Private Ewell D. Gillihan, who lost his life while serving with the U.S. Forces in Korea. He is the first Izard County soldier to be reported a casualty of the Korean conflict.

Private Gillihan, a son of Hubert Gillihan and Lena Gillihan of Batesville, was born and reared in the vicinity of Boswell and Gorby. He was about 17 years of age. He enlisted in the army at Batesville.

Besides his parents, deceased is survived by a brother, Eulys and a sister, Bonnie Jo, both of Batesville.

It is understood the body will be forwarded to Calico Rock for burial, though the time of expected arrival has yet been determined.

Body of Soldier Killed in Korea Due to Arrive today

The body of Private Ewell D. Gillihan, who was killed while in action with the U. S. Forces in Korea, is due to arrive in Calico Rock, today, Friday escorted by M-Sgt. Jas. R. Price.

The body was forwarded from Oakland, Calif., Tuesday and is expected to arrive here on today’s south-bound train, at 11:12. The Hall Funeral Home of this place will receive the body and will be in charge of funeral arrangements.

Funeral services to be conducted by Rev. W. C. Steward of Melbourne will be held at Jones Cemetery, near Boswell, this Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock.

Private Gillihan is the first Izard County boy to lose his life in the Korean conflict. He was born in the vicinity of Boswell, a son of Hubert and Lena Gillihan, now residents of Batesville. He enlisted in the army at Batesville some six or eight months ago.

Official announcement of his death was received here about six weeks ago, at which time it was stated that the body would be returned to Calico Rock.

Besides his parents, deceased is survived by a brother and a sister.
