**Note: Woodmen Circle Home was created in the 1920s as an orphanage and a dormitory for widowed women. The fraternal organization that ran it was the first of its kind to offer life insurance to women. Part of the deal was that if a woman who held a policy passed away, her family members would get a payout.

Founded by Joseph Cullen Root in 1891, the Woodmen Circle was a women’s auxiliary of the Woodmen of the World organization until 1895, when it became incorporated as the Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle, a fraternal benefit society. https://legacy.lib.utexas(.)edu/taro/utcah/02601/cah-02601.html (remove brackets in before edu)
