The Honorable Terry Lee Short-Crabtree, 55, of Bentonville died at his home in Bentonville Saturday morning, Jan. 6, 2007. An associate judge on the Arkansas Court of Appeals, he was appointed to the position in 1996 by Governor Huckabee and subsequently won re-election to the position for the third district in Northwest Arkansas. Re-elected in November 2006, he was preparing to begin his second elected term in office.

He received his bachelor's degree in sociology in 1979 from the University of Arkansas and his Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1982, both in Fayetteville. He dispatched at Gravette Police Department and milked cows at a small dairy farm part of the time and clerked for the Benton County Public Defender, Don Huffman, to pay his way through college and law school. In addition to serving on the court, Terry also served on the faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Prior to serving on the Appeals Court, Terry served as Circuit/Chancery/Juvenile judge (for both Benton and Carroll counties), Benton County Public Defender and Municipal Judge in Bethel Heights. He served in Army with the First Cavalry Airborne Division and was a helicopter door gunner in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. He served with the Los Angeles Police Department in the 77th Division (south-central and Watts) from 1971-1977 as a police officer, where he was injured in the line of duty and received an honorable medical retirement. Terry and his family have farmed in Bentonville since 1984, raising cattle and poultry while enjoying his horses.

Terry was born June 9, 1951 in Bentonville. He recently changed his last name in honor of his late grandfather, James Paul Short. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Eugene Crabtree, and his brother, James Rex Crabtree. He is survived by his mother, Ramona Crabtree; his wife of 25 years, the former Diane Crouse of Harrison; brother Larry Eugene Crabtree; sister Debbie Lynn Woodside; children Michelle Hacker of Benton, Jarred Crabtree and Ben Crabtree of Bentonville; a nephew Elliott Crabtree; nine other nieces and nephews; and grandchildren Rachel, Kyle, Ryan Hacker and Brayden Wilkins.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Bentonville. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 8, at the funeral home in Bentonville.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at First Methodist Church, 201 N.W. Second St., Bentonville (phone 479-273-2712).

Burial with military and law enforcement honors will follow at Miller Church on Punkin Hollow Road west of Bentonville, where he practiced his renewed faith in Jesus Christ Our Lord.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter, a project in support of his lifelong vision of helping children, at 702 S.W. Regional Airport Blvd., Bentonville, 72712.
