WEST, John William - Sadness settled with a dark cloud over the home of Bro. N.O. West and family on the morning of July 27, 1917 and spread to many other lonely hearts as it became known that death had claimed the father, Eld. John William West, after an illness of nearly seven months. Bro. West was born in Indiana Feb. 5, 1841. At the age of fourteen he moved with his parents to Iowa. Later they moved to Missouri, then to Kansas where he enlisted in Co. E., 18th Kansas. Shortly after the war he moved back to Missouri and in 1878 he moved to Benton county, Arkansas where he resided until he was called hence. He was married to Miss Almina Dickey Dec. 14, 1865. To this union was born one son, R.F. West, who still survives. His wife died May 10, 1868. In 1871 he was married again, the bride being Miss Mary V. Peebles, who survives to mourn his loss. Of this union were born four sons, two of whom, N.O. and W.D. West are still living, the other two having died in infancy. Besides his wife and children he leaves one brother, L.B. West of Gravette, Ark. and one sister, Mrs. D.L. Barnett, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and a host of sorrowing friends. Bro. West was converted and united with the Baptist church at eighteen years of age. He was ordained to the ministry by the Liberty Baptist church in Newton county, Mo. April 12, 1874. He preached the introductory sermon in the Benton County Baptist Association in the sessions of 1889, 1901, 1906, 1912 and 1914. He was moderator of the Association in the sessions of 1907, 1908, 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1915. He was Missionary of the Association for all or part of the years preceding the sessions of 1887, 1888, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1904 and 1905. The body was interred in the Butler Creek Cemetery July 28, 1917 after a funeral sermon preached by Eld. T.F. Jones. Compiled from data obtained from relatives of the deceased and from the minutes of the Benton County Baptist Association. J.L. Chastain.
