Born Norfork, Baxter County, Arkansas, August 25, 1923.
Died the Philippines, May 14, 1945.
PFC Edgar Gearl Parnell died while on active duty with the 172 Infantry in World War II. He died in the Luzon Campaign while directing machine gun fire on a hostile position. He was awarded a Silver Star Medal posthumously. PFC Edgar Parnell was originally buried in the Philippines, but his remains were returned to the United States after the war, and a funeral and re-burial was held at Galatia on February 13, 1949.
For 60 years, his grave was marked with a white marble military marker standing at the head of the grave. In 2009, the family erected this new memorial marker and placed the original marker flat at the foot of the grave. The inscription on the new marker adds his full middle name of Gearl, and it shows that he was awarded a Purple Heart and Silver Star plus his wife's and son's names are also shown.
