Born July 4, 1843 in Canada and died January 8, 1903 in Lincoln County, Arkansas.
Charles fought with the 106th Infantry of Illinois, Company B in the Civil War on the Union Side. He enlisted Aug 9, 1862 and was discharged July 12 ,1865 at Pine Bluff. Arkansas, then traveled to Camp Butler, llinois July 24,1865 where he received final payment. A story was told by a family member on March 11, 1997. She said the Union Army was coming down the old military road, Elvira Reynolds McLemore was a widow and the Army was hungry. They saw an old chicken house. Elvira shot Charles Newman forstealing her chickens. The story was told that she nursed him back to health and he returned back to the Union Army and came back and married her after his discharge.
