BLACK ROCK — Joe David Winfrey Sr. of Black Rock died Wednesday, Aug. 22, after an extended illness. He was 69.

In 1960, Winfrey and his wife, Carlene, moved to Spartanburg, S.C., where he was a manager at Plaza Manufacturing, a division of Jonathan Logan until 1983. He then founded David Industries, a garment manufacturing subcontracting shop in Spartanburg, which he managed for four years.

He also sold garment manufacturing equipment and consulted for garment shops in Spartanburg, Miami and Guatemala before retiring and returning to Northeast Arkansas in 1994.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Carlene, survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Marcia Winfrey of Louisville, Ky.; grandson, Jake; and brother, Kenneth Winfrey of Jonesboro, the former sheriff of Phillips County.

Visitation will be this evening from 5:30-8 at Bryan Funeral Home in Hoxie.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Smithville with graveside service to follow at Hope Cemetery in Imboden.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Bernards Hospice of Jonesboro or the American Cancer Society.

A Mason and a Shriner, he was a former member of the board of directors for Mid-City Shrine Club in Lyman, SC. He also was a founder and former president of the "Hillbilly Motorcade No. 2" in Spartanburg, SC, a group of Shriners who refurbished vintage cars to drive in parades and other functions to raise funds for Shriner's Hospitals.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Carlene, survivors include son and daughter-in-law David and Mary Marcia Winfrey of Louisville, KY; grandson Jake; and brother Kenneth Winfrey of Jonesboro, AR, the former sheriff of Phillips County, AR.

Visitation will be Friday, 5:30-8:00 PM at Bryan Funeral Home in Hoxie, AR. The funeral will be Saturday, 10:00 AM, August 25, 2007 at New Hope Baptist Church in Smithville, AR.

Graveside service will be at Hope Cemetery in Imboden with Masonic Rites at graveside.
