James L. Parker

James L. Parker was born July 30, 1829, in Hardin County, Kentucky, or Crawford County, Illinois, to David R. & Susannah E. Harris Parker. In the 1850 census of Macoupin County, Illinois, he was shown as being 31 years of age; in the 1880 census of Macoupin County, Illinois, he was shown as being 40 years of age; in the 1870 census of Macoupin County, Illinois, he ws shown as being 50 years of age; and the 1900 census of Grover Township, Baxter County, Arkansas, he was shown as being a widower, 70 years of age, and having been born in July 1829.

James L. Parker married Mary Jane Smith in Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illiois, on November 3, 1858, by a Squire Freeman. He and Mary Jane Smith Parker were the parents of 16 children.

He died in Marion County, Arkansas, January 3, 1903, and was buried in the Noe Cemetery on the White River in Marion County, Arkansas. No newspaper account of his death could be located. The Noe Cemetery was a family cemetery, and he was the only non-Noe family individual to be buried there. When the cemetery was relocated prior to the impounding of Bull Shoals Lake, his remains were placed in the southwest corner of cemetery away from the 17 Noe family members that were buried there in much the same portion of the cemetery as his grave had been in the original cemetery.

As an added note, his wife, Mary Jane Smith Parker died May 18, 1889, in Oregon County, Missouri, and was buried in Old Cemetery in Thomasville, Oregon County, Missouri.

This is one of three individual gravestones in the Noe Cemetery. The style of the gravestone indicates that it may have been purchased and placed in the cemetery after the relocation.
