William Banks was born in Georgia, October 21, 1850, his parents being Robert Gunion and Louisa (Cornwell) Richmond. In 1853 the family moved to Floyd County, Ga., and five years later went to Jackson (now Lincoln Parish), La. In 1867 they came to Scott County, Ark., where the father became a well-to-do farmer. While in Georgia he served some time as justice of the peace. Gunning Richmond, the grandfather, came to America with his parents, prior to the Revolution, from Ireland, and after attaining his growth lived in South Carolina until his death. Davis Cornwell, the maternal grandfather, lived and died in South Carolina. The parents of our subject were Presbyterians in faith, and reared a family of seven sons and four daughters, of whom William Banks was the fifth child. In 1867 he accompanied his parents to Scott County, and was married there, about 1870, to Rutha Texanna Claunts, daughter of John Harvey & Ellender McBee Claunts , early settlers of Sebastian County, where Rutha Texanna was born. It was in the Blackfork Community that the Richmond & Claunts families became acquainted. About 1870, William Banks moved his family with his brother John Davis to Dayton Sebastain County Arkansas.
