“Bethel Cemetery listed on register”
The Bethel Cemetery, located near Denton, has officially been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the country’s official list of historically significant properties.
Arkansas Historic Preservation Program Director Frances McSwain announced the listing on June 28.
The Bethel Cemtery, located on County Road 225 one mile north of Highway 117, features burials dating to 1835.
“Bethel Cemetery is the final resting place for many early, pioneering families who settled in the area east of Smithville, known as the Denton community,” the National Register nomination said.

Old Bethel Cemetery is located on Lawrence Road 225 approximately 1.1 m north of AR Highway 117. [Lawrence Road 225 is 4.5 m east of the town of Smithville and 6.5 m west of the town of Powhatan.] The entrance into the cemetery is approximately 0.2 m west of Lawrence Road 225.
