Jesse A NEAL

Union Grove Cemetery
Newton County,
Arkansas

May 9, 1909 - Oct 23, 1978

Jesse is the son of Amos A. & Sarah 'Tuggle' Neal. He is the husband of Maudie 'Rich' Neal.
Together they had three children, Loretta, Homer & Larry. Maudie passed away the day after Larry was born. Jesse never re-married.
He was a minister throughout his adult life.
His most used 'by word' was 'By Thunder'.
As a child I rememeber seeing Jesse always dressed in dark dress pants with a white shirt and hat. He loved to fish and could spend any night or evening that he got the chance on the 'creek' casting his plug into the deep holes of water to hopefully catch a small mouth bass or rock bass, locally known as a goggle eye bass. Jesse had story after story about his fishing exploits. One of the stories about Jesse, one that he himself told has always been a favorite of mine... one time at a local revival when he was at the pulpit preaching, and was in the spirit, his sermon was on being cast out of heaven for sinful living. As he got more into his preaching he made the statement that if your heart wasn't right with God you'd be cast out of heaven. As he finished the sentence his false teeth flew out of his mouth and landed on the foor in front of him near the alter. Without missing a beat, Jesse stepped down off the raised pulpit, walked over, picked up his teeth, slapped them back in his mouth and said, "Just like those false teeth, you'll be cast out!" He finished his sermon without further comment on the incident, but, the story told by him and everyone else was always a favorite to be repeated and passed around at the next revival in the communities where Jesse was known. He was a good and fair man, a good neighbor and a dedicated man of God.
