Olen C Hendrix was born in Pike County, Arkansas to Owen B and Catherine Wingfield Hendrix. He married Carmen Cornish on October 25, 1929. In 1952 he was appointed to the Arkansas State Highway Commission by Governor Sid McMath. In 1955 Governor Orval Faubus appointed Mr. Hendrix to the State Hospital Board. Appalled by the primitive facility conditions for Arkansas' mentally ill, he ran for State Senate in 1958 and won the seat vowing to improve conditions. As he continued to serve as Arkansas State Senator until 1982, he was a long time chairman of the Legislative Council and the Joint Budget Committee. While in political office he helped to establish Old Washington State Park, Red River Technical College at Hope and CARTI. He also served on the board of trustees of Harding University from 1964 to 1998. His business ventures extended to President of the Bank of Prescott, chairman of the board of the Bank of Delight, lumber and retail sales and oil production. He had an eighth grade education, but was conferred with an honarary doctorate of laws by Harding University in 1989. He was a member of the Antoine Church of Christ where he served as an elder. He was predeceased by his son, Representative Gerald C. Hendrix. He was survived by his wife and children: James William Hendrix, Darwin Hendrix and Annette Hendrix Baldwin.
