Grave of Gilbert Hicks showing petrified wood. According to family stories, Gilbert had his and wife, Elizabeth's, graves dug before they passed away. Gilbert was buried at the northeast corner of the cemetery. But when Elizabeth died a few months later, her (empty)grave had filled with water. So another grave was dug further up the slight incline from Gilbert's. Walter Burton marked their graves with large pieces of petrified wood. When their headstones were erected in 1987, the pieces of wood were placed at the foot of their graves.
