Wapanocca NWR Cemetery
Crittenden County,
Arkansas

Overview looking toward the cemetery.

This property has been owned and operated by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior's Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife Refuges when the Waponocca National Wildlife Refuge was officially sold to the NWR in 1963.

- The site is a Pre-Mississippian Era Indian Mound this mound is registered with the Arkansas Archaeological Survey as Site No. 3CT125.
The area around the Pre-Mississippian site was used as an African American cemetery, which is significant, in that there was a trail and in 1887 the Waponocca Duck Hunting Club was formed here. Many of the early hunting guides and hunters were laid to rest in this area. This was a very popular hunting area for many years up to the 1970's. It is also known as the "Golightly Mounds Cemetery".

These are the only markers we could locate but there may be more hidden in the brush and vines. If you "Volunteer" to help clean this up, you must fill out a "Volunteer Application" at the main building, remember, vaults were not used during the period the cemetery was used and there are sinkholes all over the place due to failure of water to properly drain please make safety your Top Priority.

The Pre-Mississippian Indian Mound is known by the Arkansas Archaeology Survey as SITE NO. 3CT125.
