Joseph M. Smith Dies at Melbourne

Joseph M. Smith, one of Izard County’s oldest and must respected citizens, died early Friday morning, Jan 18th, at the home of his son, S. W. Smith at Melbourne. His death followed an illness of about ten days.
Mr. Smith spent practically all his life in this county. He was born at Lunenburg, but has lived in different sections of the county and more recently has been at Melbourne. His wife preceded him in death about six years ago.
Deceased was well known over this section and held the highest respect and esteem of all. He was quite active in public affairs and was a supporter of every move for the betterment of the community in which he lived. He was a devout Christian, being a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving, are four sons, S. W. Smith of Melbourne, W. O. of Brockwell, A. W. of LaRussell, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Maud Gilbert of Guion and Mrs. W. A. Baker of Norfork. Three brothers and a sister also survive. They are; Dr. J. D. Smith of Violet Hill, Dr. J. H. Smith of Oxford, Dr. R. L. Smith of Melbourne and Mrs J. P. Gray of Brockwell.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Church of Christ at Melbourne, interment being in the Oxford Cemetery. Services were conducted by Elder Howard of Melbourne.
