July 27, 1868 - January 30, 1948
Joe Stokes, aged 81, died January 30 at 11 a.m. at the home of a daughter in Bearden. He was born on July 27, 1868, at Hampton. He is well known throughout South Arkansas. On February 28, 1889, he married Joan Basket, who survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Mart Callaway and Mrs. A. P. Jones, both of Bearden; three sons, Robert of Tinsman, Tom of Haynesville, La., and George of New Iberia, La.; 30 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, January 31, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with Rev. John Harris of Thornton, officiating, assisted by Rev. O. R. Ball of Bearden. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Pallbearers were the grandsons. The Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce, was in charge of the arrangements. (Camden News - February 3, 1948)
