Winfred Earl "Wimp" Gates, born March 22, 1937 at the family home in Plant, Van Buren County, Arkansas, the fifth of six children to Hollis and Martha Gates.
A 1956 graduate of Clinton High, he served in the US Army from 1960 to 1962 after being drafted, attained the rank of Specialist and was given an honorable discharge.
Married Ann Roberson of Cleveland, Conway County, Arkansas on July 3, 1963. The couple had one son, Winfred Jr, and moved from Morrilton to Conway in 1973. Wimp died on April 24, 2000 due to a stroke one week earlier, age 63.
