GEORGE DONALD "DON" MCCULLAR March 1, 1921 - Oct. 3, 2010Don was born to Ruby (Hanry) and Jesse J. McCullar at Tubal Township, New Hope Community, Union County, Arkansas. After graduating from Parkers Chapel School he worked at the Lion Oil Refinery in El Dorado, Arkansas. He refereed and umpired high school and college ballgames throughout Arkansas. After joining the Navy he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Port Lyautey, French Morocco during World War II. At the end of the war his naval ballteam went to Marseille, France for a baseball tournament (which they won!). He returned home to his wife Merle and new daughter, Trisha. He was involved in the Union at the Lion Oil Refinery and decided to go to the Beaumont, Texas area and begin his life's work as a Union Organizer and Representative. Ever the natural born "negotiator" he found his "niche" in life. He was business manager of Local 1550, the Houston City Employee's Union, for many years. He became very involved in politics during this time. Many families benefited from his strong determination to obtain better working conditions, pay and other benefits for the "working people" of Texas and other states. In February 1971 Don was a delegate to Paris, France, seeking release of our Vietnam War POWs. He went to Attica, New York to help resolve the prison riot problems. After leaving Local 1550 Don worked in the Austin, Texas area. He was an Area Director for AFSCME, AFLCIO. After retiring at age 57, he spent much of his time at Hot Springs, Arkansas, Lake Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend Lake in Texas. He especially enjoyed going to see the horses run at Oaklawn in Hot Springs and also various other racetracks. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Merle (Kuhn) McCullar; daughters and their families: Trisha and John E.
