*Obituary
Greatly feeling the loss of our dearly beloved citizen and feeling so sadly bereaved, desire to chronicle the death of J. W. McFarland which occurred at his home four miles east of Emmet, Feb. 12th, 1917. Had he lived until April 4th, he would have been 78 years. Mr. McFarland was born in Pontotoc Co., Miss., April 4th, 1845. His parents afterwards moved to Union Parish, La., where he lived until after his marriage to Samantha Matthews Dec. 31st, 1868. He moved to Arkansas to the same place at which his death occurred. Mr. McFarland leaves to mourn his absence, a faithful and loving wife, six devoted children, Mrs. Henry McFarland, of Manning, La., Mrs. Jim Snell and Mrs. Tom Snell of Emmet, Ark., J. R., W. E. and J. M. McFarland of Emmet, Ark., eighteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. He lived a useful life, was much loved and respected by those who knew him. He was a kind and loving father, a devoted husband and obliging neighbor. He knew no stranger, his doors were ever open to the weary traveler. He was a man of excellent health until an attack of pneumonia about four years ago, since which time he had been in ill health and through the suffering he so long and patiently endured, he often said if it was the Lord's will he was ready to go, that he had made his peace calling and election sure. He was laid to rest in the Snell Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. D. Elkins, of Blevins, Ark. He lies in the cold grave, yet he liveth in a more beautiful home than this. Look to God for comfort. He alone can heal our sorrows. We heartily express our condolence for the bereaved and say, humbly bow your hearts to God who is too wise to err and say, "Thy will be done; not ours," for we soon shall meet him and the redeemed of God where we shall part no more.
