Jack H. Carpenter, Sr., age 90 of Hamburg, went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Mr. Carpenter was resident of Hamburg for 80 years and of Russellville for the past 10 years. He was an avid fisher of men serving as an active deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member at First Baptist Church in Hamburg. He served as a youth Sunday School teacher with his wife, Corene for many years. Later, he taught the senior men in the Carl Locke Sunday School class. Mr. Carpenter continued his ministry to others through his membership and work with the Gideon's International as a witness and speaker in churches. Mr. Carpenter and his brother Charles cleared land and built the screen for the Sunset Drive In, later selling it to their brother, Robert A. He and his brother, Charles then opened Home Supply on the north side of the Hamburg square and later moved the business to the south side of the square changing the name of the business to Carpenter’s Fine Furniture. Mr. Carpenter served his community as a salesman who prided himself in delivering furniture to many states. He was also an active Hamburg Chamber of Commerce member and a former president of the chamber. He was a veteran United States Army Air Corp having served during World War II.
Mr. Carpenter is preceded in death by his first wife of 60 years, Corene Choate Carpenter in 2005, his parents Charles F. Carpenter and Lydia Linder Carpenter and two brothers, Robert Allen and Charles Francis Carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Polly Riley Carpenter of Russellville; two sons, Jack H. Carpenter Jr. and wife, Camille, of Houston, AR and Ben Choate Carpenter and wife Debbie of Hamburg, a daughter Lisa Atkins of Hamburg; three step-daughters, Lynn Tyner and husband, Bobby, Beth Swindle and husband, Mike, all of Conway, and Susie Gotcher and husband, Dickey, of Louisville, Kentucky., six grandchildren; Jackson Carpenter III of Little Rock, Lori Davidson (Paul) of Dallas, Texas, Jonathan Carpenter (Kim) of Greenwood, Texas, Benjamin Carpenter (Erin) of Madisonville, Tennessee, Dr. Justin Atkins (Natalie) of Little Rock, and Allyson Tullos (Steven) of Lake Village; 11 great-grandchildren, Noah, Saylor, Gabriel, and Atticus Davidson, Jackson Henry Carpenter IV, Jayden Tullos, Ben Tyler and Emma Kate Carpenter, Heidi Corene, Eisley Snow, and Micah Ryan Carpenter; two sisters-in-law, Imogene Noble Carpenter of Hamburg and Marjorie Ott of Searcy and a brother-in-law, Milton R Barrett (Glenna) of Little Rock.
Funeral services are 11 a.m., Monday, February 2, 2015 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jackson Henry Carpenter III, Dr. James R. Atkins, Drew Carpenter, Robert Allen Carpenter, Steven Tullos, Benjamin Carpenter, Jim Atkins and Paul Davidson. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Lanier, Roy Vaden, David Carpenter, Art McCants and the Carl Locke Men's Sunday School Class Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, February 1, 2015 from at 2:00-4:00 pm. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Gideons International, PO Box 83, Crossett, AR 71635 or First Baptist Church of Hamburg, PO Box 352, Hamburg, AR 71646.
