FAYETTEVILLE — Dr. Loren Ray Heiple, 89, of Fayetteville died Aug. 2, 2007, at North Hills Life Care And Rehab Center.
He was born April 19, 1918, in Oakwood, Ill., the son of Eldridge and Mary Lucille Heiple. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Judd.
He was dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas from 1971 to 1979. He received a doctorate in civil engineering from Stanford University in 1967, a master's degree from Harvard University in 1940 and bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 1939. He joined the University of Arkansas faculty as head of the civil engineering department in 1950 and remained in that position until he was named dean in 1971. He retired in May 1984, following 34 years as a faculty member at the university.
He was a longtime member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville and a member of the Fayetteville Rotary Club for more than 50 years. Dr. Heiple was a World War II veteran serving in the European Theater. He joined the 306th Civil Affairs Group in Fayetteville in 1950 and remained in the Army Reserve until 1978, when he retired with the rank of colonel.
During his academic career he remained active in professional activities. He was a member of the Arkansas Society of Professional Engineers serving as vice president and director and served as the chairman of the Arkansas-Missouri Section of the American Society for Engineering Education. He was invited to membership in Theta Tau in 1956 and Tau Beta Pi in 1960 and was a longtime member of the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineering. In 1966, he was appointed to the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and later reappointed to that board by then-Gov. Bill Clinton. One of his favorite hobbies was the annual family tent camping trips, which took the family to most of the states in the country.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie E. Tillman Heiple; one son, Tim Heiple and wife Marty of Little Rock; one daughter, Lynne Hill and husband Bob of Springdale; one sister, Wilma Frey and husband Hal of Berkeley, Calif.; five grandchildren, Justin Cope and wife Maegen, Lindsey and Kyle Cope, all of Fayetteville, Drew Heiple and wife Ashley of St. Louis, Emily Heiple of San Francisco; one great-grandchild, Loren Austin Cope of Fayetteville; a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of past engineering students and colleagues across the country.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 3 at National Cemetery in Fayetteville.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Norwood V. Brown officiating. The family will be available to meet guests immediately following the services.
