ROGERS — William H. "Dub" Ray, 71, of Bentonville, died April 26, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers.
He was born Aug. 16, 1935, in Marmaduke to Marlin B. and Ora Nations Ray.
He attended Arkansas State University in Jonesboro on a basketball scholarship. After graduating, he was a high school basketball and track and field coach for 22 years in Childress, Marmaduke, Marked Tree, Bay and Bentonville. Two of the basketball teams he coached received State Sportsmanship Awards and his Marmaduke track team won a state championship.
He was employed by Wal-Mart for 23 years and served as the initial president of the Northwest Arkansas Maintenance Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Randal Shane Ray.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 52 years, Lena V. Ray of Bentonville; sons Steven of Jacksonville, Ala., and Flynt of Branson, Mo.; daughters Kimi Lisa Benson of Atlanta and Ginger Lynne Stegall of Bentonville; brother Jackie of Chattanooga, Okla.; sisters Gloria Gray of Paragould, Nelda Vojtanic of Harlingen, Texas, and Marlene Brengard of Paragould; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home in Bentonville, www.backstrom-pyeatte.com. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Haflich officiating. Burial will be at Buttram's Chapel Cemetery in Pea Ridge. Memorials may be made to the Tribute Program, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis 38105=1942.
