Last Thursday morning about 9:30 Luther Armstrong, about 35 years old and Wm. Hill aged about 60 years, met at the public road about three miles south of Emmet, Nevada county, both were driving wagons. Armstrong was coming to the gin at Emmet and Hill was returning home from the gin. Armstrong called at Hill to stop and Hill refusing to stop reached down in the wagon and Armstrong supposed that he was reaching for his gun, shot and killed Hill. He used a shotgun and fired only one time. There seems to have been trouble between the two men for years and Hill threatened to kill Armstrong on first sight, and just a few days before the killing the two men met at the dipping vat and it is alleged that Hill attempted to carry his threat into execution, when Armstrong ran from him and got on the opposite side of the vat and remained there until Hill left. The Coroners jury which was empaneled at once by Dr. C. F. Nelms, exonerated Armstrong. (Nevada County Picayune - September 20, 1917)
