Billy Joe Hardin was born November 27, 1931 near El Dorado, Arkansas to Early Marion and Genie Lillian Bishop Hardin. He was surrounded by family as he passed from this life on December 27, 2013.
Bill was raised in El Dorado and attended Myrtle Grove School through the eighth grade. He was a 1949 graduate of El Dorado High School. On August 6, 1952, Bill was united in marriage to Bobbie Lee Brint of Norphlet by Bruce Murphy. To this union three children were born. The couple had the honor and privilege of celebrating 56 years of marriage. Bill joined the Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict, being honorably discharged in 1954. After serving his country, Bill worked briefly for the El Dorado Fire Department. He then accepted a position with Murphy Oil Corporation as a Data Processor. The Hardins moved to Crossett, AR in 1964 where he worked as an Information Resources Manager for Georgia Pacific, retiring in 1986. Bill and Bobbie moved home to El Dorado in 1991.
Bill is survived by one daughter, Denise (Jerry) Martin of Montgomery, AL; two sons, Douglas Hardin of Memphis, TN, and David Hardin of Sherwood, AR; one brother-in-law, Truett Longing, of El Dorado; 7 grandchildren: Paul, Chad (Signe), Amy and Nathan (Amanda) Martin, and Brad (Dixie), Ashley and Andrew Hardin; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, Ruby Longing, and one great-grandson, Stone Martin.
Bill was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he was involved in many areas of service through the years. He was a deacon, sang in the choir, worked on the camera crew, assisted with Operation Christmas Child, and took numerous mission trips to Brazil and Guatemala. Bill was a longtime member of the Gideons. Bill and Bobbie loved to ride their motorcycle, traveling extensively throughout the U.S. A highlight of their travels was a trip to the Holy Lands. They particularly cherished spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill enjoyed reading in his spare time. Like his Lord, he was no respecter of persons in regard to his kindness and generosity.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Murphy, Dr. Jerry L. Martin, Kay Ruddell, and Rev. Don Moore officiating. Burial with Naval military honors will be in Burns Ebenezer Cemetery under the direction of Perry’s Funeral Chapels.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Gideons International, P.O. Box 10562, El Dorado, AR 71731, or to the John R. Williamson Hospice House, 2301 Champagnolle, El Dorado, AR 71730.
