Mary Alice Jones, 91, of El Dorado, died Monday, February 17, 2014, at the Medical Center of South Arkansas. She was born Mary Alice Morgan, the fifth of seven children, on January 7, 1923, in El Dorado to David Augustus and Harriett Eliza Pickering Morgan.

Mary Alice graduated valedictorian of her class at Parkers Chapel High School in 1941. After graduation she went to work at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., for a number of years. Later she traveled overseas to Tokyo, Japan, during the occupation where she worked for the military in the Far East Command HQ for three years. After returning to El Dorado, she met and married her husband of 41 years, Hamp S. Jones. She worked at the Social Security Administration until her retirement.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and active in the Open Door Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, Fellowship of the Sent, and Golden Girls Exercise Group. Mary Alice loved to travel, and she and her husband enjoyed many wonderful trips together during their retirement years. She enjoyed gardening and kept a beautiful backyard full of flowers and blossoming trees. She also enjoyed needlework and won countless ribbons at the fair for her crocheted afghans. She was an energetic lady, always taking care of others. She was a loving daughter, wife, and mother.

A special thank you goes to Diane Johnson for her love and excellence in caring for our mother during her final years. Thank you also to Dr. Scott Hardin and those who cared for her at Courtyard Health and Rehabilitation.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hamp S. Jones, her parents; and five brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Barnes and her husband, Marty, of El Dorado, and Rosemary Poague and her husband, Jerry, of Van Buren; three grandchildren, Stephen Barnes and his wife, Madison, of Boston, MA, and Morgan and Jenna Poague of Van Buren. She is also survived by a sister, Helen Corwith and her husband, Paul, as well as her beloved nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Young’s Funeral Directors.

Funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 20, at Young’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Adam Thomas and the Rev. Keith Dodson officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 201 S. Hill, El Dorado, AR 71730
