Arkansas

March 19, 1921 - May 20, 2019

Mr. Samuel Cooper, age 98, of Marrero, Louisiana, passed away on May 20, 2019 at Wynhoven Nursing Home. Sam was born in Minden, Louisiana on March 19, 1921 to Samuel William Cooper and Myrtie Ethel Terrell Cooper. He grew up in Minden and Shreveport, Louisiana. At age 19, Sam married his sweetheart, Mildred Lucile Warnock at her home in Elliott, Arkansas. God blessed them with two sons, Harry and Jimmy.

Sam served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Aleutian Islands (1944-1946). It was in the Navy that Sam was educated and learned his vocation as a dental lab technician. After working for dental labs in Shreveport, Louisiana and Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sam established Service Dental Lab in Shreveport with partner, Hubert DeBroeck, which serviced northwest Louisiana for over 25 years.

He was a devout Christian and was active in Engleside Baptist Church and Morningside Baptist Church in Shreveport. For many years he worked with Kiwanis International. When Mildred’s health began to fail, Sam and Mildred retired to Elliott, Arkansas to be close to Mildred’s family. Sam set up a lab in a small building in the back of the house so he could supplement retirement and be close to Mildred after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He faithfully cared for her until her death in 1994. Sam retired again in 2011 and moved to Marrero to be close to his son, Harry. At his death, Sam was a member of First Baptist Church of Marrero.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Mildred. He is survived by his two beloved sons: Samuel Harry Cooper and wife Susan of Marrero and James Lee Cooper and wife Mattie of Eagle, Idaho. Grandchildren: Dana Comstock and husband Jeffrey Benzick, children Julianna and Kaleb of San Antonio, Texas; Stephen Cooper and wife Donna, son A.J. of Kentucky; Nicholas Cooper and wife Amy, children Daniel and Payton of McKinney, Texas; Dr. Benjamin Cooper and wife Ali, children Micah and Jonah of Houston, Texas; Brandon Cooper and daughter Caroline of Houma, Louisiana; Jessica Cooper Moore and husband Justin, children Lucy, Abby, Jude, and Ellie of Weatherford, Texas.

Sam was known as a kind, gentle man. He shared the love of Jesus throughout his life as a sailor, a dental technician, a farmer, a volunteer fireman, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, a volunteer at local nursing homes, and a friend to all he met. His smile, love of life, devotion to family, and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Sam will be recognized for his volunteer service with Chateau de Notre Dame and Wynhoven on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the 9:30 Mass in the Chapel of Chateau de Notre Dame, officiated by Deacon Jeff Tully and Fr. Al Bermudez. Visitation will be at Proctor Funeral Home in Camden, Arkansas on Friday, May 24, 2019 from 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be held in Elliott, Arkansas at Elliott Baptist Church on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 10:30 am, officiated by Dr. Rex Horne and Nicholas Cooper. Interment will follow at Bethesda Cemetery in Camden, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Symphony Chorus of New Orleans in memory of Sam.
