Columbia County,
Arkansas

June 6, 1919 - November 22, 2016

Charles Edward Dunn, age 97 of Little Rock, died Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at his independent living apartment at Shepherds Cove. Charlie was born in Magnolia (Columbia County) on June 6, 1919 to parents C.D. and Estella Robinson Dunn.
He grew up in his father’s restaurant, “The Ole Man’s Place”, and eventually bought out his father, brother and sister to own it on his own. He was known throughout the ArkLaTex region for his excellent chili with customers regularly driving from Dallas, Texas to buy it by the gallon. He continued to make it until his death. After selling the restaurant in the mid-60’s to spend more time with his family, he worked at Oakridge Farms selling eggs and greenhouse tomatoes.
He was beloved by all who knew him. He had numerous stories about his life in Magnolia during the Great Depression and his service as a mess sergeant during WWII in Alaska. His autographed picture of him and Ingrid Bergman who visited Alaska as part of the Bob Hope Troop during the war was a prized possession.
He was active and held numerous leadership positions in Jackson Street and Asbury United Methodist Church in Magnolia until 1983, and continued to be active in First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia until his health began to fail. He moved to Little Rock and independent living when he could no longer live alone in his house in Arkadelphia. Although his physical health failed him, his mind stayed active and sharp until the very end. He had a deep affection for his family and neighbors such as Pat, Sherry and Tim Hayes of Arkadelphia.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Nora Lucille Dunn, and his oldest son Dr. Charles DeWitt Dunn who was President of Henderson State University for 27 years. He is survived by his youngest son, Michael Edward Dunn and wife, Mary M. Dunn of Leesburg, Virginia; his, daughter-in-law, Jane Parsons Dunn; five grandchildren: Meredith Dunn and husband, Jose Ortiz of Silver Spring, MD; Aimee Shouse and husband, Robert of Macomb, Illinois, James Dunn and wife, Haruno of Kawasaki, Japan, Joseph Dunn and wife, Rachel of Little Rock, Mary E. Dunn of Little Rock; five grandchildren: Emma and Meghan Shouse of Macomb, Illinois and Ethan and Isabell Dunn of Little Rock, Emily Dunn of Kawasaki, Japan and seven loving nieces who live across the South.
