James R Staggs, 88, of Magnolia, formerly of McNeil, Arkansas passed away February 1, 2016 at the Magnolia Regional Medical Center.
He was born on June 14, 1927 in McNeil to the late William Wiley and Mildred Lucile (Sims) Staggs.
Mr. Staggs was a lifelong educator and high school counselor for the Camden Fairview and Stephens school districts. He was the founder and director of the Tri-state Teen Pageant for many years. For over 60 years he promoted Gospel Music in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas beginning with the Magnolia Melody Boys in the 1940s. In 1975 he organized a group of four teen boys into the Men of Calvary Quartet, and continued until 2012. Over 30 young men were involved throughout the 37 year history of the group. His talent was widely used in special programs, nursing home ministries and funerals throughout south Arkansas.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Wiley J. Staggs, W.T. Staggs, Martel Staggs, and Arlie Staggs; three sisters, Barbara Elise Schmidt, Sybil Hare, and Ida Mae Sewell.
He is survived by his nephews, Buster Schmidt and his wife Kathy, Jimmy Staggs and his wife Vie; great nephews, Brandon Schmidt, Tre Kidd and his wife Sherri; great nieces, Kelli Thomas and her husband Mike, Marsha Turner and her husband Mark; great great nephews, Karsen Kidd, William Thomas, Robbie Thomas; and great great niece, Elizabeth Turner; and many friends.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday, February 4, 2016 beginning at 12:30 pm at Lewis Funeral Home Chapel with a funeral service to start at 2:00 PM with Bro. Petie Ward and Bro. Eric Goble officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery.
The Men of Calvary will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to New Hope Cemetery, PO Box 192, McNeil, Arkansas 71752.
