Mrs. Opal Brasher, age 97, surrounded by family and friends went home to the Lord on April 10, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. She was a lifelong member of the Milner community and Victory Baptist Church. Those of us fortunate enough to have known Ms. Opal understand what a truly amazing lady she was. Not only was she one of the last remaining depression era matriarchs, having chopped cotton, lived without running water, and gone through the depression she also embraced everything the 21 century had to offer. Upon hearing people talk about the “good old days” she would comment that “these are the good old days”.
She truly lived her 97 years to the fullest, receiving the most pleasure from her family, friends, church family and even people she didn’t know. She had a quick smile but could also wield a switch for those caught misbehaving. She raised a family, cared for her ailing parents, and worked in the healthcare business. She was a woman beyond imagination, better than any fairy tale she could tell. Although she stayed busy on into her nineties with the yard work, house chores, and chasing any child that was around, she always found the time to cook- the most incredible fried potatoes (much better than McDonalds!), anything from the garden (that she grew), cornbread, and super sweet tea (yes, even that was better than McDonalds), clean, fish, drive, or engineer tree houses for her family. At ninety years old she flew a plane, built a snowman, and recovered (somewhat gracefully) from a broken hip sustained from an accident with her pit bull puppy! She lived an astounding life full of faith in the Lord, hope for the future, and an astounding love for everyone she knew.
As a testament to her impact on family, all of her living children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren along with countless friends attended the memorial and the funeral. She touched so many lives even without ever leaving Columbia County!
She is preceded in death by her parents, John Otis and Esther (Bailey) McLaughlin, husband, Bascom Brasher, son, Rodney Brasher, three grandsons, Alan Brasher, Doug Brasher, Jason Brasher, one brother, and two sisters.
She is survived by her two sons, Don Brasher and wife Lavonne, Dale Brasher and wife Nata; one daughter, Terry Teutsch and husband Mike all of McNeil, Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Mary Brasher of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a host of very special nieces and nephews, and many wonderful dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 10:00 am the Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Phillips and Rev. Lonnie Warren officiating. Burial will follow at the New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. of Magnolia. Family visitation will be on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Ward, Glen Brasher, Randy Brasher, Chris Teutsch, Zac Brasher, and Steve Hardy. Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Brasher, Justin Brasher, and Will Ellis.
