William "Bill" David Compton, 61, of Fayetteville died Aug. 21, 2007, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville, after a battle with lung cancer. He was born April 18, 1946, in Little Rock to Neil and Laurene Compton. He grew up in Bentonville where he was an All-State halfback on the state championship team in 1963 and graduated from Bentonville High School in 1964. He attended the University of Arkansas and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Bill was a Navy veteran, serving aboard the USS Vulcan in Newport, Va. He had a long working career in retailing, first working in his grandmother's clothing store, Putman's Men's Store in Bentonville and later serving as manager of the Paul Bunyan Store in Fayetteville. Bill knew many people in Northwest Arkansas who will remember him as a fun-loving, caring friend. He was a huge Arkansas Razorback fan and enjoyed playing golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents of Bentonville.

Survivors include his son, Spencer David Compton of Fayetteville; two sisters, Ellen Compton of Fayetteville and Edra Compton Diaz of Lawrence, Kan.; three nephews, David Shipley of Little Rock, Neil Shipley of Fayetteville and Martin Diaz of Kansas City, Kan.; a great-nephew and great-niece. Other important people in his life were Georgia Compton of Rogers, Curtis Shipley of Fayetteville, Trude Swift of Rogers, Betty Rendon of Bella Vista and Judge Robert Fussell of Fayetteville.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Lee, Jimmy Phillips and Tommy Ricketts.

A family burial will take place at Pea Ridge Cemetery on Friday, Aug. 24.

The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Friday at Compton Gardens, 312 N. Main St. in Bentonville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Compton Gardens or to the Neil Compton Scholarship Fund.
