Laurene Putman Compton, 74, of Bentonville, died Sept. 3 at her home.

She was born Mar. 9, 1916, at Rogers to William Henry Putman and Edna Swift Putman. She was a homemaker, a lifetime member of the Bentonville Garden Club, and a dedicated advocate of environmental and architectural preservation. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville, the Ozark Society, the National Audubon Society, the Kay Hively Creative Writing Club, the Rogers Little Theatre, the Bentonville and Bella Vista Historical Societies, and Beta Sigma Phi.

Survivors are her husband of 50 years, Dr. Neil Compton; two daughters, Edra Diaz of Lawrence, Kan. and Ellen Shipley of Fayetteville; one son, Bill David Compton of Bentonville; and four grandsons, Martin Diaz, Spencer Compton, and David and Neil Shipley.

Memorial service is set for 10 a.m. Friday at Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista, with the Rev. Claiborne M. Bell and the Rev. Gordon Garlington III officiating. Private burial will be in Pea Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bates Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Ozark Society or to a favorite charity.
