From the Russellville Courier-Democrat

Lewis Brashears-One of Pope County's oldest and well known citizens, died at his home in Dover Friday, January 26, 1900, of floating spleen. Burial occured at the Dover Cemetery at 11:00 o'clock the following day, the services being conducted by Alec Bringle.

Deceased was about 70 years of age and had spent more than half of his life in Pope County. He was an honest and upright citizen and enjoyed the confidence and respect of a large circle of acquaintences. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father.

In 1837, Lewis, his parents and eight siblings located to Greene County, Missouri from Cumberland County, KY. Lewis' mother died in the mid 1850's in Greene County and his father died during the Civil War hiding from Union Forces, per a book on the history of Greene County.

He married Mary Ann Petty 19 Oct. 1869 in Dover, Pope County, Arkansas. His given name may be Robert Lewis Brashears.

On January 20, 1862, he enlisted in the 3rd Battalion, Missouri Cavalry, CSA where he was elected 2nd Lieut. He was in the Battles of Bentonville, Elk Horn, Farmington, Iuka, Corinth, where he was wounded, and Hatchie Bridge.

In the spring of 1864, James Mitchem, Lewis' brother-in-law was detained and fined by the Provost Marshal in Springfield, MO because he failed to report the presence of Lewis in the area. Capt. Lewis Brashears was described as being a "bushwacker and robber". This is why he left Greene County when the war ended and relocated, first to Vernon County, MO, then to Pope County.
