1872 - 1948
El Dorado, Nov 2. - Judge William Elbert Patterson, aged 76, veteran El Dorado lawyer, and former jurist, died in a hospital here Monday. Judge Patterson was the dean of the El Dorado and Union County bars and had practiced law here more than 40 years. He was born at Camden, and attended schools at Holly Springs, Dallas County, and Henderson-Brown College at Arkadelphia, which now is Henderson State Teachers College. He studied law in the offices of Gaughan & Sifford at Camden and received his law degree from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn. in 1903. That year he opened a law office in Hampton. Judge Patterson came to El Dorado shortly after the turn of the century, and served as mayor from 1905 to 1907 and as judge of the Thirteenth Judicial District from 1913 to 1914. Many years he was a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian church here. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Resse Graham Patterson; a daughter, Mrs. John J. McCarthy of El Dorado; three sisters, Mrs. W. H. Gossett of San Francisco, Cal., Mrs. Oscar Pledger of Fordyce and Mrs. Olen Proctor of Holly Springs; and a brother, C. A. Patterson of Holly Springs. Funeral will be held at the First Presbyterian church by Dr. David Shepperson at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery by Rumph mortuary. (Camden News - November 2, 1948)
