July 23, 1945 - March 26, 1968

Lawrence Poole, 22, of Rt. 1, Strong, was killed shortly after noon Tuesday when the pickup truck he was driving collided headon with a pulpwood truck about 15 miles southeast of El Dorado on the Pigeon Hill Road. A passenger in the Poole truck, Van Buren Fife, 27, also of Strong, was injured and is in the intensive care unit of Warner Brown Hospital. A spokesman for the hospital reported Fife's injuries included lacerations of the head and knee and burns on his back and listed his condition as critical. Driver of the pulpwood truck, Carl L. Smith, 43, also of Strong, received only minor injuries. Poole, driving a Humble Oil truck at the time of the wreck, was an employe of Urbana Well Service. Fife is employed by the same company, and Smith is self-employed. Sheriff's Deputies Bill Saunders and Charles Orr said that the wreck occurred approximately 25 feet north of a 16-foot wide bridge when the left front of both the empty pulpwood truck and the Humble Oil pickup were in collision. Officers said the cab of the pickup was torn from the other part of the truck. Poole was born July 24, 1945, in Strong, and was the son of Raymond and Lucille Hogue Poole. He was a lifelong resident of Strong. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Vickie Welch Poole; a daughter, Melissa Poole; his parents; three brothers, Huey Poole of Wooster, Ohio, Charles Poole and Raymond Poole, Jr., both of Middlesboro, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Nadine West of Middlesboro, Ohio. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Knowles Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Diffie, Rev. E. L. Johnson and the Rev. Jim Lair officiating. Burial will be in Center Point Cemetery under direction of Rumph Mortuary. The body was taken to the family home on the Old Strong Highway Wednesday afternoon. (El Dorado Times - March 27, 1968)
