June 11, 1860 - June 20, 1922
Hot Springs, June 20 - J. E. Flemister, former county road commissioner, was shot to death as he slept this morning, by his daughter, Winnie, aged 32, who officers say, is demented. The shooting occurred at the home of the Flemisters, nine miles north of this city. Flemister was about 65 years old. His wife had arisen leaving her husband asleep, and supposed the daughter was asleep also. She went into the yard and shortly after heard a shot. The daughter appeared in the doorway and said, "I killed father. He won't do any more farming, anyway." Flemister was shot between the eyes with a .32 calibre Winchester rifle. The daughter was known to be demented and at times had been somewhat violent, but she was not considered dangerous. She was brought here and taken to Little Rock to be placed in the state hospital for nervous diseases. The shooting took place between five and six o'clock. Flemister, besides the wife and the daughter who killed him, is survived by a son, Carpe Flemister of Little Rock, and a daughter, Mrs. Josie Carpenter of Hot Springs.
