MARTIN, Mary E. FRANKLIN - In spite of the extremely cold weather a large number of friends attended the funeral services at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Mary E. Martin, wife of Dr. C.F. Martin, whose death occurred at the home of her son, Harry Martin, and family on C Street, S.E. at 10 o'clock Monday morning, January 20th, 1930 at the age of 69 years, eight months and 27 days. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of the Bentonville Methodist Church, South with the entire choir of that church and members of the choirs of the Presbyterian and Baptist churches taking part in the service. Interment was made in the Bentonville cemetery. Mrs. Martin, whose maiden name was Miss Mary E. Franklin and whose father was a distant relative of Benjamin Franklin of universal fame, was born in Wayne County, Indiana April 23rd, 1860. There she grew up to young womanhood and was married in Wayne County on August 27th, 1881 to Charles Francis Martin, who survives her. To them were born four children, one of whom died in infancy. One son, Frederick, died at the age of 12 and another, Robert, at the age of seven. Both were victims of diphtheria. The only surviving child is their son, Harry Martin, of this place. Dr. and Mrs. Martin and family lived in Wayne County, Ind. until 1888 when they moved to Evansville, Ind. where Dr. Martin practiced his profession as veterinarian until 1910 when they and their son, Harry Martin, moved to Arkansas, locating here at Bentonville where they have since lived and where Dr. Martin practiced his profession until virtually retiring a short time ago on account of advancing years. When very young Mrs. Martin became a member of the United Brethren Church back in Wayne County, Ind. There being no church of that denomination here she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South after coming to Bentonville and thus faithfully continued her church affiliations and active church work. On the Sunday morning before she was stricken with her fatal illness on Tuesday evening, she was in her regular place at the morning church service, nor did she forget to see her pastor following the service and express to him her appreciation of his sermon. It is said of her by those nearest to her that she faithfully loved and tried to serve her church and to carry into her daily life the virtues of a Christian character and was always willing to help others wherever and whenever needed. It was while attending the Christmas tree exercises of her church and Sunday School on Tuesday evening, December 24th, 1929 that she suffered the stroke of paralysis from the effects of which she passed away nearly five weeks later. Following the stroke she was first taken to the Martin home on B Street, N.W. but was later taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martin where her son and wife and other members of that family could better help to care for her. Besides her husband and son Mrs. Martin is survived by six grandchildren and by two brothers, John C. Franklin of Economy, Ind. and Al Franklin of Williamsburg, Ind.
