Marvel Ann Middaugh, 91, of Van Buren passed away Aug. 29, 2013.
Marvel was born on April 11, 1922, in Cowles, Neb.
Marvel grew up impoverished in a time when so many had so little. She learned to survive through charm, focus and sheer force of will. Marvel married Guy right out of high school and never left his side until his death more than 50 years later. She raised five successful children: An accomplished state senator, a decorated Marine Corps officer, a real estate investor and a pair of physicians. However, to this day, I remain most impressed by her effort with the many foster children she managed to nurture, protect and "just" be a mom for time after time.
