He was a navy veteran of World War II, a member of the First Baptist Church, vice-chairman of the Board of Deacons, teacher of the Young Married Department at First Baptist Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He began his career in the grocery business at the age of 15 when he worked on Saturdays as a package boy at the Hays and Oliver Grocery Store in Van Buren. In 1938, and for a period of about three years, he worked for Whitt Bourns, also in the grocery business.

From there he went to Sikeston, Missouri where he worked for about three years for the Liberty Cash Grocery, but he then moved to Van Buren to work at the old Market Basket, owned then by Jim Sargent and Paul Bercher.

In 1968 he opened the Town and Country Supermarket who had acquired the store from Grady Putman. He took over management and co-ownership of the present Hays Food Store in 1970.

He is survived by his wife; two sons; two daughters;; seven brothers; and four sisters.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of the First Baptist Church.
