Sybil Torrence was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Ellis Mills. She attended Douglas High School and finished in 1929, Valedictorian of her class. She entered Arkansas State University, Pine Bluff, AR completing two years with honors. In 1934 she married Samuel C. Torrence they had one child, Samuel C. Torrence, Jr. Now a Doctoral Student at the University of Mississippi. In 1936 she began her teaching career in Arkansas. In 1951, she received her B. S. Degree in Elementary Education from Rust College and became assistant Librarian in September of that same year. After doing advanced study in Library Science at Prairie View College, Prairie View, TX and Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA. She became Head Librarian at Rust College. She did further study in Reading at the University of Mississippi, Jackson State, Mississippi State and was certified as a Reading and Elementary Teacher and an Elementary Librarian. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church. She was a member of the NAACP, MTA, NEA, Wesleyan Service Guide, United Methodist Women, AAUW and various other religious and civic organizations.
Mrs. Sybil Torrence, former teacher in Douglas colored school in Van Buren, suffered severe burns to her face and hands last week in an explosion of a stove at her home in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she is assistant librarian at Rust College. She was attempting to light the oven of her “artificial gas” stove when the explosion occurred. The message about the accident was received recently by Mrs. Wheeler Hays of this city. Mrs. Torrence had been a member of the Douglas faculty for a number of years until last fall, when she accepted the position at Rust College. She is a member of a well known colored family of this city, where she was born and has lived all her life. The extent of the burns was reported to be serious.
