Ben
December 2, 1851 - July 25, 1899

Ben F. Hodges was born December 2, 1852 on a boat on the Ohio River, near Cannelton, Indiana to John and Ann Medlicot Hodges.
He departed this life in 1899 in Van Buren, Arkansas.

Ben's father was from England and his mother from Ireland. He had sisters, Mary, the wife of Dr. Thomas Caster of Ozark, Arkansas; Harriet, wife of N.F. Cornelius of Van Buren.

Ben was six years old when he arrived in Van Buren, and at the age of eleven began to clerk in a store. In 1865 he went to Rochester, Indiana to learn the baker's trade and in 1869 he returned to Van Buren where he worked as a baker until 1871. He once again began to clerk at a store and in 1879, himself, H.F. Meyer and J.W. Statler went into the general merchantile business. Mr Statler sold his share to the others in 1885 and then was owned by Meyer and Hodges.
They carried a complete and first-class line of goods and had a large patronage.

Mr. Hodges was a Democrat, a member of Ivanhoe Lodge No. 27, K of P. He was a man of good business, temperate habits and courteous manners.
