World War II
June 24, 1894 - November 21, 1930
George Powell, aged 36, of Fort Smith hanged himself at the United States Veterans Hospital, Fort Roots, at 6 a. m. Friday. Dr. Samuel G. Boyce, coroner, returned a verdict of suicide.
Powell, a patient at the hospital, called for attendants at 5:30 a. m. and they accompanied him to a washroom. They returned him to his room immediately. At 6 when the guards returned to the room to arouse him for breakfast, they found him dead. Powell had used a twisted bed sheet. He had fastened one end to a window frame and the other around the neck. His feet were only three inches off the floor.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. Allen F and Sarah Ellen Frazier Powell, and a brother, Walter Powell, all of Fort Smith. The body is held at the R F. Drummond & Co.
