Virginia May Cowart, 74, of Alma died Monday, April 11, 2011, in a local hospital.
She was a medical writer for the American Medical Association, a graduate of the University of Kentucky, the science editor for the division of biological science of the University of Chicago and a writer for Living Strong magazine. She was a dedicated musician, a pianist, organist and vocalist. She was born in Alva, Ky., lived in Chicago for 37 years, and had been a resident of Alma since 2003 and a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith.
Memorial service was 11 a.m. Friday, April 15 at First United Methodist Church at 200 N. 15th St. in Fort Smith, with burial at Newberry Chapel Cemetery in Alma under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Alma.
She is survived by her husband, Gail Cowart of the home; one daughter, Lark Cowart of Chicago; one son, David Cowart and wife Megan of Philadelphia; one sister, Louise Haugh of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Henry Snodgrass of Jacksonville, Fla., and George Snodgrass of London, Ky.; and two grandchildren, Gabriel and Spencer Cowart.
